New radio drama set for premiere and Passiontfruit broadcast

Athlone Community Radio 88.4FM will premiere the radio drama An Unexpected Nightingale on 'For Arts Sake' on Wednesday December 12 between 6 and 7pm. The play was written and directed by local author Martin Kelleher and is funded by the BAI's Sound & Vision scheme. Born in Cork City and living in Athlone, Martin has published many short stories and his book "Small City Blues" published by Fish appeared in 2000. He has been involved with Passionfruit Theatre and Making Space. The play tells the story of Maria, an artist in her thirties. She is hired as a companion by a blind man, Carroll, to help him take walks in the grounds of the private hospice to which he has been confined. While initially having almost nothing in common with Carroll she not only rediscovers through their shared insights a purpose in her neglected painting, but understands how stagnant and compromised her life has become. An Unexpected Nightingale was produced, recorded and edited by radio producer Alan Meaney. Having worked for over four years in Athlone Community Radio, Alan has numerous experiences in producing radio plays. Recording took place in August at Athlone Community Radio studios and other locations in the area.
