Community Radio wins two awards

Athlone Community Radio 88.4fm was presented with two CRAOL Achievement Awards at a special ceremony held recently at the Shamrock Lodge Hotel. CRAOL is the forum for the 24 Community Radios in Ireland and are supported by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. "The Fixture List" won an award in the Sports category while "Gentex - The Factory That Shaped The Life of Athlone" also won an award in the Commissioned Programming category. Congratulations to Robbie Mulvey, Sports Programming, and Irena Cvetkovic, Producer, whose hard work culminated in these two awards for Athlone Community Radio. Judges described the Gentex documentary as "A brilliant achievement, from the very opening piece with the sewing machines and the wonderful interviews with the ex staff of Gentex. It's very well paced and beautifully crafted, the timing and continuity of the stories is excellent". And in relation to the Sports award, judges remarked: "Great effort to get out of the studio and a host of contributors make this a real community radio show". The Fixture list is broadcast each Friday @6.30pm, Gentex was broadcast as 4 half hour programs earlier this year and will be repeated again in 2012. This documentary series will be available through the CRAOL Programme Sharing Initiative, for broadcast on the other 23 community radios in Ireland.
