Details of a novel Westmeath cookery challenge, based around the popular Ready, Steady, Cook programme, have been unveiled. Presented by Westmeath Tourism Ltd, the event will take place at 8pm.

The event will take place in the Visitor Centre of Belvedere House, Gardens and Park, Mullingar. Recommended as a "fun night out for foodies" this is a treat not to be missed.

The overall aim of this exciting new food event is to promote local restaurants.

"The emphasis is on supporting local businesses and offer a new style of food event for people to enjoy. Each participating restaurant has nominated a chef to take part and the chefs will cook off against each other in pairs against the clock," said Rhona Rogers, Tourism Development Officer.

Restaurants from all around Westmeath are taking part. Businesses include Sheraton Athlone Hotel, Glasson Hotel and Golf Club and Temple Country Retreat and Spa while Annebrook House Hotel, Bloomfield House Hotel, Greville Arms Hotel, Ilia Tapas & More and the Fish Market are also participating.

"All the ingredients cooked on the night will be locally supplied. There will be a specially designated area on the night to facilitate links between local food producers and local restaurants.

Many already use local foods on their menus and we would encourage more to do the same," enthused Aine Gavigan, Uisneach Catering .

Local foodie Ann Hamill who appeared on the RTE cookery programme "Heat" will act as compere on the night.

On arrival, each ticket holder will receive €140 worth of vouchers from participating restaurants.

A wine and local cheese reception and tastings from the best of Westmeath restaurants will be on offer in the Restaurant Exhibition area.

Tickets €35 each on sale from Belvedere, House, 044 9349060. Visit www.belvedere-house.ie.
