Looking after your hair extensions
The hottest hair fashion item this year is most definitely hair extensions. We see a growing popularity in adding length, colour and volume to clients' hair. There are lots of new methods available since the simple one-strand bonding technique. Celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Jessica Simpson, Raquel Welch and Paris Hilton not only wear them but are actively involved in their marketing.
There are two types available: synthetic and real hair. Beware of cheaper brands which claim to be real hair but are not. Heat irons or tongs cannot be used on synthetic hair. And be warned that some people are allergic to the synthetic hair also.
Hair extensions need to be taken care of. In general, the longer lasting ones last between two to four months. They should never be put in hair if more than twice the client's own length. Anything after that will be problematic to style, up-keep and to remove. It depends how quick the hair grows as to when they should be removed. This procedure is a full service in itself and takes a considerable length of time if removing pre-bonded individual strands. Not all salons will take on the removal service as it is so time consuming and can be difficult to do.
There are several methods available. Long lasting ones include tape hair and individual strands attached by bonds or micro beads. It is important to keep the extensions clean. The hair tangles when dirt and sweat builds up. It is important to use a sodium free shampoo as this will not interfere with the newly-attached bonds in the hair. When brushing use a soft bristle brush, take a section away and start at the ends of the hair working up in a downward brush motion. If using real hair this can be curled and straightened when required. They should be stored in a hair extension pouch.
The extensions can be shampooed and dried when required also. Extensions that last only 24 hour include clip-in and Halo couture. These are re-usable and can last for 12-24 months if cared for properly.
