Membership of Moate Library has risen by a staggering 94% since the new premises opened last December, the latest Athlone Area Committee meeting heard.

In all, membership is currently 943 that's up from 487 from the early part of 2008, prior to the relocation. Borrowing of books over the time also skyrocketed by over 87%.

The statistics were revealed at the Athlone Area Committee meeting last Tuesday, after Chairman Joe Whelan queried whether the library move from the courthouse to a new premises along Main Street on December 9 last had an effect on membership and usage.

Meetings Administrator Billy Coughlan outlined to the members that opening of the new library in Moate has been a "success with the general public resulting in phenomenal increase in membership and usage of the library".

He added key factors contributing to this were improved space, increased book stocks, improved opening hours, computer facilities, photocopying and printing services. The dedication and enthusiasm of Lorna Farrell, Library Assistant, was also praised by Mr Coughlan, who referred to her active promotion of the library to diverse user groups.

A number of class visits with the local primary schools in the area had also been organised, while links with the School Liaison Officer in Moate Community College had also been arranged with book promotions and displays held in the library on an ongoing basis. Resources permitting, a programme of exhibitions and events would also be undertaken during the year, Mr Coughlan concluded.
