Chorus of welcome for Bealnamulla road works

There has been a chorus of welcome for road works in the Bealnamulla and Monksland areas.

Fianna Fáil Cllr John Keogh, who lives in the area, has welcomed the works, saying they were long overdue.

Cllr Keogh said: "I am pleased that works have been commenced. The Bealnamulla to Monksland Rad was in a terrible condition, and since I got elected last June, I have received many representations about the state of the roads, footpaths and lighting in the area. Hopefully these works will greatly improve the surface condition of the road and this is a prime opportunity to carry out the construction of and repairs to footpaths adjoining the road in question.

Cllr Ollie Moore also welcomed the action taken by Roscommon County Council in carrying out road reconstruction and resurfacing works on the R362. Cllr Moore stated: "This road had been deteriorating for some time and I had been making representations to Roscommon County Council on the matter for several months, the matter finally came to a head with the severe weather conditions we've encountered over the last two months with the rain and freezing temperatures leading to some of the worst pot holes on this stretch of road to be found anywhere in the county."

Cllr Moore also welcomed resurfacing works being carried out on the Taughmaconnell/Bealnamulla Road this week. "It is vital that the Fianna Fail / Independent-led Council in Roscommon organise a deputation to meet with government ministers as a matter of urgent importance in order to lobby for additional money to be allocated to the 2010 Roscommon County Council roads programme in light of work that has had to be carried out a result of the unprecedented bad weather experienced."

Cllr John Naughten also welcomed the repairs on what he termed "a particularly poor section of road between River Village and the Mill Bar in Monksland".
