Lecarrow's Richie and the Taoiseach!
Taoiseach Enda Kenny meets with Mayor of West Roxbury, Boston, Richie Gormley at the JFK Library in Boston.
Gormley will be organising the Boston Gathering to Ireland with a visit to Lecarrow on Sunday, June 9, at 2.30pm and will dedicate a new public bench in honour of his late brother, Brigadier General William J. Gormley III. The public is invited to the ceremony.
Gormley’s ancestors hailed from Lecarrow and he has restored the ancestral home in the area in recent years.

New advocacy service for children in care extends to Mid Leinster
EPIC National Advocacy Service was officially launched yesterday, May 7 by Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Frances Fitzgerald TD.
The service aims to empower, support and represent the views of children and young people in care and ensure that their voices are heard on issues and decisions that affect their lives. This extended service will provide a more, accessible and independent service for the most vulnerable children and young people in our society.

With only days to go, record numbers have already signed up for Pieta House’s Darkness into Light event next weekend as the suicide charity gears up for what looks to be the biggest turnout ever for the event. Now in its fifth year, and taking place simultaneously in 20 locations nationwide on the morning of Saturday, May 11, Darkness into Light is being supported for the first time this year by Electric Ireland.
This unique event begins in darkness at 4am on Saturday morning as thousands of people gather at locations across Ireland and walk or run a 5km route as dawn is breaking.

Census 2011 area overview of Roscommon
The picture painted of Roscommon from the recently published Census Area Profiles from 2011 is one of an ageing population. The statistics have shown that the number of older aged people living in Roscommon is higher, proportionately, than the state average. In all age categories from age 50 + the number of people living in Roscommon was greater, proportionately, than the national average. In April 2011 there were 9,396 persons aged 65 years and over living in Roscommon.

Motorists urged to remember road safety this Bank Holiday Weekend
Drivers are being cautioned to take extra care on the roads this weekend as figures show fatalities are up on this time last year. Motorcyclists are in particular being urged to exercise caution as the number of motorcycle fatalities has doubled from 3 to 6 in the past four weeks alone.

Athlone native Fr Raymond Browne has been appointed the new Bishop of Kerry by His Holiness Pope Francis today.
The 56-year-old has been Parish Priest of Kilgefin in Roscommon in the diocese of Elphin for the last five years.

This May bank holiday weekend, a peleton of cyclists will be arriving in Athlone as part of the first leg of the One4all Cycle4haiti, a two day charity cycle to Eyre Square, Galway.
