TriAthlone road closures start today

The road closures around the town to facilitate the four-day triAthlone event start today (Wednesday).

From 2pm today until Sunday, July 4, at midnight, Grace Road/Accommodation Road from Ss Peter and Paul's Church will be closed as far as the Railway Bridge. The main Westside closures begin tomorrow Thursday July 1. Accommodation Road/Grace Road, Magazine Road, Connaught Street, Pearse Street, Barrack Street, St Peter's Square/Market Place as well as Talbot Avenue will be closed from 5pm to 9pm.

On Friday July 2 from 6pm until midnight Sunday July 4, Church Street will be closed off from the Griffith Street junction as far as the Lloyds Lane junction (around the taxi rank area where the finish line will be). On Saturday July 3 and Sunday July 4, from 7am to 11.30am and again from 1.15pm until 6pm (both days), the majority of road closures will take place throughout the town. The roads affected are: Magazine Road (from Barrack Gates northwards), Old Galway Road to new roundabout at Baylough and return, Grace Road/Accommodation Road, St Peter's Square/Market Place, Castle Street, Main Street, Fry Place, High Street, Bastion Street, O'Connell Street, Pearse Street, Barrack Street, Town Bridge, Custume Place, Church Street, Dublingate Street, Griffith Street and The Strand/Strand Street.

Connaught Street and all of Magazine Road will also be closed off on Saturday and Sunday from 1.15pm until 6pm. According to Athlone Town Council, the alternative routes available are the N6 Athlone bypass and R445 Castlemaine Street while access to the Westside will be via the Ballinasloe Road and Clonown.
