Publicans in Athlone are applying for an extension to their opening hours to coincide with this weekend's triAthlone.

The application was initially granted in the District Court on Wednesday last, but it was subsequently adjourned when the judge learned an issue had arisen around a newspaper advertisement publicising the application.

It's expected that the publicans' application will now be granted at a court sitting on Friday.

The extension would allow all pubs in Athlone to trade until 2am this Saturday morning and until 2am this Sunday morning. An extension until 1am on Monday is also being sought.

Sergeant Michelle Baker stated that the extension would be confined to pubs within the Athlone urban area.

The application for an extension to pub opening hours is being made by Cian Moran on behalf of the Athlone Vintners Association.
