Legendary GAA commentator raises green flag

The school year ended on a high note at Glanduff NS in Kiltoom when legendary GAA commentator Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh visited to raise its green flag.

Green flags are awarded to schools which display longterm, whole-school action to improve the environment.

School principal, Arthur Geraghty, said the occasion was a proud one both for the school and community. He welcomed those who were present, stating that parents, teachers, board of management and staff were honoured to have Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh raise the flag.

Teachers Clare Nolan and Eimear O'Toole, who directed the project with the Green School Committee, then gave an overview of the green flag project from beginning to end. Marion Parker from the Environmental Department of Roscommon County Council praised the children for the huge amount of work they had done, as well as the knowledge they displayed around the whole area of recycling and waste. Mr Ó Muircheartaigh was a very popular guest at the school. Quoting words of wisdom, "Is ar scáth a cheile a mhaireann na daoine," he spoke of the importance of the local community, the primary school and the GAA club.

Speaking to the children in particular, he told them of his delight at their knowledge of their community and their care for the local environment.

He spoke of the green flag as an "All Ireland Championship win" and challenged them to get the "two in a row!"
