Coffers bulging after hectic week in Athlone

Athlone is basking in the tired but satisfied after-glow of a hectic bank holiday weekend, which resulted in scores of visitors entering the town - and businesses reporting busy trade levels.

It's been a busy few days locally, particularly during the week-long Euro-Festival which concluded on Friday night with a spectacular fireworks display.

The event brought an estimated 700 European visitors to the town, but hundreds flocked to the urban centre each night to sample the atmosphere, mingle at the Euro Village and enjoy the musical and cultural entertainment on offer each night.

Pubs reported a bumper trade during the last week helped by, in the main, the clement weather conditions which facilitated a warm street atmosphere.

"The totality of community support is what made the Euro-Festival so successful," Chairperson of the Euro Festival Organising Committee and Athlone Town Clerk, John Walsh reflected. "The support of local people all added to the great atmosphere we had throughout the week," he outlined.

On water, the Shannon Boat Rally sailed into town last week, bringing hundreds of visitors and adding to the hustle and bustle of Athlone during the week.

The organisers of the Athlone Music Festival, though, were somewhat disappointed at the small crowds which gathered to hear an impressive line-up of artists.

However, they have vowed to press on with plans for further editions of what they hope will be an annual music festival. Despite the large influx of people into Athlone, Gardai reported a quiet weekend on the crime and public order front.
