Clonbonny NS celebrates grandparents' day
The grandparents of Clonbonny National School pupils were celebrated at a special gathering in the school on Wednesday last.
Eleven grandparents of children in Anne Marie Golden's junior and senior infants class visited the school for an event that was organised as part of Catholic Schools' Week.
"It was the first year we've done this and it was very successful," commented Ms Golden. "It was designed to celebrate the massive contribution which grandparents make to the lives of our pupils."
On the day, some of the grandparents talked about how their own experience of school differed from that which schoolchildren experience today.
Tea and cake was served and the children sang for their special visitors.
"The children loved it - they were very happy and proud to have a visit from their grandparents," said Ms Golden.
As Wednesday last was the feast day of St Brigid, pupils at the school made St Brigid's crosses, which were blessed by Fr Turlough Baxter of St Mary's Parish.
Fr Turlough also visited the school on Friday, St Blaise's Day, to bless the throats of pupils and staff.
Another initiative which has been taking place in the school of late is a special project for fourth and fifth class pupils in which they are asked to look out for 'six signs of spring' and then log their observations online.
Class teacher Jacqueline Nevin said the pupils really enjoy this project as they love spending time outdoors.
They also created a home for a hedgehog and when they checked it last week they were delighted to find that a hedgehog had duly taken up residence there!
Clonbonny NS is hosting its Open Day for new pupils, from junior infants to sixth class, on Saturday, February 25, from 10am to 12 noon.
