Local councillor Aengus O'Rourke meets Steven Spielberg.

Bumping into Steven Spielberg at Bruce Springsteen!

Getting to see Bruce Springsteen perform is a treat in itself, but when you add in getting to meet the legendary Steven Spielberg it really is a case of all your Christmases coming at once. And that's exactly what happened to local Fianna Fáil councillor Aengus O'Rourke when he was at the Bruce Springsteen concert in the RDS last Tuesday. While enjoying the concert an eagle-eyed Cllr O'Rourke managed to spot director/producer Spielberg in the crowd and in his own words 'blagged' his way past security to meet the Hollywood legend. In a post on his Facebook page, Cllr O'Rourke said: "There I was in the cheap seats at Springsteen, over in the VIP section I spotted three-times Academy Award winner and world renowned movie director/producer Steven Spielberg. So, I decided I would try to blag my way through and welcome him to Ireland. I surprised myself by getting through a few layers of security and his two burly body guards to welcome him in person. I suggested that he consider locating his next Hollywood blockbuster in Athlone, he said he'd consider it and get back to me! If he does come back to me I'd like to suggest a title for the movie.... any ideas?" The post received huge feedback from locals with suggested titles including 'Custume Warriors and The Last Crusade' and 'The town that was forgotten by the Irish Government'. There was also a suggestion that Mary O herself would have to play a prominent role in any such film! Cllr O'Rourke told the Westmeath Independent that Mr Spielberg was seated in the VIP section where he enjoyed the concert with members of his family and Daniel Day Lewis. He said he was very pleasant and had a warm smile and a firm handshake. Cllr O'Rourke said he welcomed the Hollywood legend to Ireland and wished him a pleasant stay here and Mr Spielberg replied: "I appreciate it, thank you so much."
