Enda Kenny is due to officially open the Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) international arena this Friday.

The Taoiseach is scheduled to formally launch the impressive new facility at 3.30pm.

The Ä10 million arena opened its doors to the public last month with the staging of the Athletics Ireland Combined Event Championships and the Athletics Ireland Open Indoor Games.

Fine Gael Senator and athletics legend Eamonn Coghlan has said the "world class arena" at AIT would "inspire future generations of athletes towards greatness for many years to come."
