Agnes McCarthy

Setencing over manslaughter of Lily Scanlon adjourned to September

Sentencing has been adjourned in the case of a 57-year Athlone woman who was found guilty of manslaughter earlier this year.

In April, Agnes McCarthy of 118 Meadowbrook, Athlone, was convicted of the unlawful killing of 47-year old Lily Scanlon at 17 Valley Court, Athlone, in May of 2008.

At the Circuit Court in Tullamore today, Judge Anthony Hunt heard details of a victim impact report from the daughter of the deceased.

In the report, which was read to the court by Detective Garda Christopher Brown, Tara Scanlon said her mother's death had been the most devastating thing to ever happen to her.

She said her mother had always seen the best in other people and it was this trait that ultimately led her to her death.

In mitigation, defence counsel Ken Fogarty SC said Agnes McCarthy had never intended to kill Ms Scanlon and had no recollection of grabbing the deceased around the neck during a drunken argument. Mr Fogarty said Ms McCarthy recalled hitting Ms Scanlon a slap.

Judge Hunt adjourned the hearing to the circuit court in Tullamore on September 16 to allow him further time to consider his sentence.
