Shaw seeks traffic calming on Bullet Road

Fine Gael Cllr Alan Shaw has called on Athlone Town Council to request that the county council’s engineer will consider putting in place road safety measures at Bullet Road, Williamstown, where there were two car accidents recently.

The council said the request will be made, but pointed out that the road is in the 60km/hr zone and that the road was resurfaced by the county council last year.

Cllr Shaw said perhaps traffic was travelling faster than it should. He said he would welcome a visit from the engineer and the residents would be happy to speak to the engineer.

Cllr Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran (Ind) supported the motion and said this was something that was a long time going on and said traffic had increased on this road. He asked if the council could look at putting in white lines or slowing cars down with advance signs.

Cllr Sheila Buckley Byrne also supported the motion and said there was the very same problem in Clonbonny where the road had been resurfaced and a 60km/hr zone was in place.

“I spoke to a couple of farmers who queried how suitable the 60km/hr speed limit was,” she added.  Town Engineer Pat Nally said the county engineer would come over to look at Bullet Road.
