Council to be asked to consider one-way system again

The Mayor of Athlone is calling on the council to consider introducing a one-way traffic system in the town.

Such a system was introduced in Athlone on a pilot basis five or six years ago, but was binned, following criticism from traders and public alike.

Now Cllr Frankie Keena has tabled a motion for Monday's meeting of the new Athlone Municipal District committee calling on the council to consider its introduction again.

His motion reads: 'That this council consider introducing a one-way traffic management system in Athlone in consultation with the traders associations and wider public.'

A permanent one-way system was planned a number of years ago, in conjunction with a proposed four-lane road between St Vincent's Hospital and the Crescent junction.

However, the plan fell through when the council was unable to hammer out a deal with CIE to acquire land necessary for the four-lane road.
