Garda appeal after attempted robbery at ballyforan post office

Gardai have issued a fresh appeal for information about a vehicle linked to the attempted robbery of Ballyforan Post Office over the weekend.


A green Opel Astra car was seen in the vicinity of the local post office on Saturday morning, and gardai are anxious to speak to anyone who can help build a picture of its movements before, or after, the attempted robbery.


One masked man is believed to have entered the building between 9.10am and 9.15am on Saturday morning last, armed with what is believed to have been a handgun and pointed it in the direction of the sole female member of staff.

Two other masked accomplices are thought to have been waiting outside as the incident unfolded, however, the trio left a short time later empty handed.
The post office employee suffered no injuries following the incident, however, the woman was said to shaken by the ordeal.


Door-to-door enquiries are now underway in the village as gardai bid to build a complete picture of the incident. CCTV footage nearby will also be examined in the coming days.


Anyone who was travelling on any of the approach roads in the vicinity of Ballyforan village on Saturday morning between 8.30am and 9.30am, or alternatively noticed a green Opel Astra acting suspiciously on any of the local roads is asked to contact gardai in Roscommon 090 66 38300.


Meanwhile, an investigation is underway after a copper cyclinder was taken from a vacant house in Knockcroghery.
The incident happened at an unoccupied house in the village, sometime between 3pm on Thursday last, August 28 and the same time the following day.


Over in Drum, a quantity of power tools and sockets were taken from a garage building adjacent to a house in the early hours of Sunday morning last.
The burglary happened at a home in Mehanbee townland between 5am and 5.30am.
