Athlone bishop set to be special guest at local awards night

There has been a marked increase in applications for this year’s best kept gardens and estates competition, Athlone Tidy Towns group has said this week ahead of their awards night later this month.

Winners in a wide variety of categories, including the tidiest schools, businesses, gardens and housing estates will all receive prizes for their efforts on Wednesday, September 10 next in the Sheraton Hotel, Athlone, commencing at 7pm. Special guest on the night is Athlone native Bishop Ray Browne, the current Bishop of Kerry.

The annual awards night is sponsored by Athlone Municipal District (formerly Athlone Town Council) and local businesses. The competition aims to encourage and promote householders and businesses to take greater pride and interest in their own business premises, gardens and estates and surrounding areas.

The awards acknowledge the outstanding efforts put in by people and organisations within the town, which plays a significant role in contributing towards the overall tidy towns efforts.
