Local cyclists travel from athlone to achill for charity

Over 40 cyclists will trek a gruelling 197km from Athlone to Achill Island tomorrow, in aid of two local hospice charities.

Cycle Coordinator Ray O’Reilly told the Westmeath Independent that the event held in association with the South Roscommon Cycling Club, is in memory of his late mother Maisie O’Reilly, who died earlier this year.

As a tribute to the care given by the hospice to his mother in her Monksland home, all proceeds from the annual event will be split between South Westmeath Hospice and Mayo/Roscommon Hospice

“Everyone has been touched by the care they give,” Mr O’Reilly said on the eve of the cycle, which is now in its second year.

The cyclists will depart from the Shamrock Lodge Hotel at 7.15am on Saturday and hope to reach Achill by 5pm that evening.
