Athlone protest march over climate interference

A group set up to campaign against artificial interference with the earth’s weather - which it believes is happening in numerous countries - has organised a protest march in Athlone this Saturday (September 27).

The march is being arranged by Wexford Skywatch, a group opposed to Geoengineering which has been campaigning on the issue for the last few years.

Geoengineering is defined as large-scale intervention in the earth’s climatic system with the aim of counteracting global warming.

According to Terry Lawton, founding member of Wexford Skywatch, the group is concerned about solar radiation management which he said was being carried out by dispersing chemical and heavy metals into the atmosphere, via military and commercial aircraft, “with the intention of creating an artificial cloud blanket to reflect the sun’s ray back out to space and hence cool the planet.”

He said this was being carried out on a clandestine basis in numerous countries and has “no doubt that these programmes are already well underway in Ireland.”

Discussing this weekend’s march, he said: “There has been an annual global march in towns and cities all over the world for the past few years. Last year myself, my team from Wexford Skywatch and fellow anti Geoengineering activists from around Ireland held a march in Birr, County Offaly.

“There was a turnout of around 30 people and it was largely a success but we are hoping for bigger numbers this year as the subject of Geoengineering is becoming more widespread and understood.”

Saturday’s event will consist of protesters meeting up on Athlone town bridge at 2pm and marching up and down, on the pavements each side, until 3pm when the group will make its way, via Church Street, to Golden Island Shopping Centre and Burgess Park to give out leaflets, DVDs, and share information about the subject.
