Here are some of the events taking place locally on what's set to be a busy weekend!

FRIDAY, MAY 15

WESTMEATH STYLE AWARDS
The inaugural Westmeath Style Awards, in association with Specsavers, is the hottest ticket of the summer. The Gala Awards Night will take place at the Sheraton Hotel in Athlone this evening. 

KILBEGGAN RACES
The first May meeting of Kilbeggan Races, takes place on Friday, May 15, with the first race getting underway at 5.30pm.

SOCCER ACTION
Athlone Town’s SSE Airtricity League First Division campaign continues with a home fixture against Shelbourne. Kick-off at Lissywollen is scheduled for 7.45pm.

FOLK WITH FREDDIE

FIT CLUB Castledaly Fit Club continues Tuesdays and Fridays 7pm at the GAA Grounds so take advantage of the stretch in the evenings and join in the fun.

YOUTH CHOIR
Coosan Youth Choir is looking for new members from 4th class upwards. Practice on Fridays at 7.45pm in Our Lady Queen of Peace Church. Youth choir sings at the 10.30am Mass in Our Lady Queen of Peace. For more information contact 086 2463181.

SATURDAY, MAY 16

ROD AND TINA TRIBUTE
Athlone District Schoolboy/Girl League presents 'Rod and A Touch of Tina’ appearing at The Sheraton Athlone Hotel on Saturday, May 16. This tribute to the music of Rod Stewart and Tina Turner features Jacqui Miller as Tina Turner and Dylan Cassidy as The Next Best Thing to Rod Stewart. Doors will open at 8:30pm, and tickets are priced €12.50.

FAMILY WALK
Moate Community School in partnership with Westmeath Sports Partnership will host a 5k/ 10k Run & Family Walk on Saturday, May 16, at 11am with special guest Alan Mullen of RTE's Operation Transformation. Registration will take place from 10am in Moate Community School on May 16. Registration cost: Student: €5; Adults: €10 and Family: €20.

ATHLONE SCHOOLS YOUTH ORCHESTRA
Athlone Schools Youth Orchestra meets every Saturday in St Peter’s NS from 3pm to 5pm.

SUNDAY, MAY 17

HERITAGE PARK OPENING
Ireland rugby hero Robbie Henshaw is set to perform the official opening of Dún na Sí Amenity and Heritage Park, Moate, on Sunday, May 17.
The amenity, encompassing over 27 acres of parkland was developed by the community on the former cow park lands on the Mount Temple road, adjacent to the existing Dún na Sí Heritage Centre.

LEINSTER BID
Westmeath begin their Leinster Senior Football Championship campaign against Louth in Drogheda at 3.30pm. After relegation from Division 2 in the League, Westmeath will be hoping for better in the Championship with Wexford awaiting the winners.

CAKE SALE
Clann na nGael Ladies GAA will hold a cake sale on Sunday, May 17 in Johnstown clubhouse starting at 11am. All contributions to same would be greatly appreciated and tea/coffee served on the day also.

SOUTH ROS CYCLING CLUB
The club is a recreational organisation comprised of cycling enthusiasts with a wide range of abilities and interests. We have training rides leaving Clann na nGael clubhouse at 9 am every Sunday. These rides range from 20- 30km for beginners, to 70km-120km for the elite. We also have our annual charity cycle coming up soon: Tour de South Roscommon - annual charity cycle for members and non members of the South Roscommon Cycling Club.
This years charity is Irish Pilgrimage Trust and it will take place on the 13th of June. Like us on facebook for more information.
