Man taken to hospital after street assault

A man was taken to hospital following an alleged assault on an Athlone street at the weekend.

The victim, who is in his 30s, was taken to hospital in Ballinasloe after an alleged row along Mardyke Street at 11.30pm on Saturday night. His injuries are reported to be minor in nature.

Another man, also in his 30s, was arrested in relation to the alleged incident. He was later released without charge pending further investigation.

Despite large crowds congregating in the town for TriAthlone on Saturday and Sunday last, gardai reported a quiet weekend overall in terms of public order.

One other person, a juvenile, was detained in relation to public order offences on Sunday in Burgess Park.
