Little theatre at garden party in the ras

Representatives of Athlone Little Theatre last month attended Áras an Uachtaráin when the who’s who of the world of amateur drama in Ireland gathered for a garden party at the invitation of President Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina.

In the glorious summer sunshine of an afternoon in June, 450 people representing almost 150 drama groups and associations nationwide were greeted by President Higgins and the First Lady before being treated to a tour of the house and the magnificent gardens.

Athlone Little Theatre was ably represented by Ray Collins and Olive Martin, who were the lucky members drawn from a hat in response to the invitation received by the group.

In welcoming those assembled, President Higgins spoke highly of the amateur drama movement and praised the very valuable contribution it makes in communities throughout Ireland.
Entertainment from a traditional harpist to a lively jazz band was laid on for the guests with plenty of scrumptious hors d’oeuvres to satisfy eager taste buds.

By all accounts, the atmosphere was relaxed and the mood convivial on what was a truly enjoyable occasion.  And needless to say, Mr Collins was not behind the door in adding to the party atmosphere!
