Poll boost for Fine Gael as general election draws closer
A new opinion poll has given Fine Gael a major boost ahead of the general election early next year.
The latest Ipsos MRBI poll, published in the The Irish Times this morning, showed the party leading the way nationally with 30% support.
This represented an increase of 2% on the previous poll and it will be warmly welcomed by the party's three election candidates in Longford-Westmeath (Gabrielle McFadden, James Bannon and Peter Burke) and by Maura Hopkins who is running for the party in Roscommon-Galway.
Sinn Fein was the party with the second highest level of support at 21%, which was up by 2%.
The news was glum for the other electoral groupings with support for Fianna Fail down by 1% (to 19%), Labour's backing down by 1% (to 7%) and a 2% drop in support for Independents and others (23%).
