Plethora of prizes for local Young Scientists

There were two local category winners at the BT Young Scientists exhibition at the weekend.

Louise Egan, Sarah Denby and Fiona Molloy,representing Athlone Community College, took first place in the Biological and Ecological (intermediate group) section with their project: 'Rewetted and degraded bogs: Carbon emissions and botanical composition.'

The trio also took home a special award from the Environmental Protection Agency.

And they were joined on the winners podium by Daniel Breheny of the Marist College who was chosen in first place in the Biologcal and Ecological (junior individual) section with his project also on bogs, entitled, 'Boglands – A Changing Environment'.

Ciaran McDermott and Joseph Reidy, also of the Marist College, were second in the Technology (intermediate group) category with 'Wake Up To Driver Fatigue'. This project was also chosen for an EI Electronics special award.

Tierna Maguire of Our Lady's Bower took third place in the Technology intermediate individual category with Moo Munch while Graham Turner of Moate Community School won a special award from HEAnet for his project: 'Is technology the way forward for education?'
