Pensioner mugged at Athlone church

A pensioner was recently mugged at a church in Athlone in broad daylight.

The shocking incident occurred at the town’s Franciscan Friary at approximately 1.15pm on Friday, April 8.

Sergeant Andrew Haran, of Athlone Garda Station, said the victim was a 69-year-old local man.

The pensioner was approached by a person who pushed him against the door of the church and demanded money from him.

It’s understood that a sum of €180 in cash was taken by the culprit, who was described by Gardai as an Irish male.

While no injuries were reported, the crime caused considerable distress to the victim.

Sergeant Haran said the Gardai were now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

“This was a serious incident and one which we are currently investigating,” Sgt Haran said.

“If anyone was in the vicinity at the time we would be delighted to hear from them.”

Anyone with any information on the incident is asked to contact Athlone Garda Station on 090 6498550.
