Flood relief works approved for Athlone

Flood relief measures totalling €100,000 for Athlone have been given the go-ahead, Longford-Westmeath TD, Deputy Kevin 'Boxer’ Moran has confirmed.
The two areas concerned are Canal Walk and Griffith Street.
Boxer said the work at Canal Walk would involve the use of a temporary water based flood barrier and a new valve configuration.
In a Griffith Street a new non-return valve will be constructed to prevent water from surcharging onto the quay area.
“The cost of these works is expected to be in the region of €100,000 and the OPW has indicated its willingness to provide funding for these measures. It is expected that these works will be undertaken by the council shortly.”
“As everyone knows these areas have been particularly affected by flooding in recent winters and it has been a key priority for me going into Government to address the problems with a great sense of urgency.”
Boxer added that, in relation to The Park area, discussions are ongoing between the council and OPW on how best to deal with this issue.
He said: “It is hoped that a solution may be identified for which OPW could consider funding.”
