Cpl Gavin Carey

Search for missing soldier continues

The search for an Athlone-based soldier who went missing in Donegal on Tuesday is continuing today (Friday).
Cpl Gavin ‘Care Bear’ Carey went missing while swimming in the sea off Donegal on Tuesday.
From Mullingar, Cpl Carey is a member of the 2 Artillery Regiment and is stationed in Athlone.
The 29 year old had been in Finner Camp this week undertaking a course in preparation for overseas service.
It is understood that six friends entered the water at a place called Rougey, when they got into difficulty. Two of those in the party were rescued.
Some 100 members of the Defence Forces, including a number from Cpl Carey’s unit in Athlone, are taking part in the search. Naval divers and an Air Corps helicopter are also involved, as are a number of other services including the Coastguard helicopter, the RNLI and Donegal Mountain Rescue Service.
The open day at Custume Barracks which had been scheduled for Sunday has been postponed as the search for Cpl Carey continues.
