The late James O'Brien with his partner Karen Anders

Ballinahown to remember the late James O'Brien

HUGE crowds are expected to gather in Ballinahown on Sunday for the James O'Brien Memorial Tractor Run and Kids Fun Day.
The event is in memory of James O'Brien (32) who died a year ago. James, who was the father of two young children, was very popular in the area and the local community is keen to ensure he is remembered.
James originally hailed from Kilgarvan, Fardrum and lived in recent years in Hillcourt, Cartrontroy, with his partner Karen Anders and their children.
Karen has described James as “larger than life. He just brightened up any room that he walked into.”
James had taken over the family farm and ran an electrical business, and was hugely skilled and hard-working in both fields. He also lectured students in electrics in the ETB (formerly VEC) and in FAS (now SOLAS) in Athlone, and was known across the region through his work on various electrical contracts.
The James O'Brien Memorial Tractor Run & Family Fun Day in association with Doon/Rashna Vintage Tractor Run and Ballinahown Development Committee will take place in Ballinahown.
The tractor run will start in Doon, will go through Ballinahown, Moate and Castledaly, before returning to Ballinahown.
A seat in his memory, erected in the Butterfly Garden in Ballinahown, will be unveiled on the day.
Local councillor and family friend John Dolan said the support of the local community has been superb.
“The response we got is mind blowing. It shows how well thought of James was. People have offered donations, prizes and help. It has been really amazing. It will be an emotional day for the whole community,” he said.
He said that a massive crowd is expected at the event which will be a family day out, with events for people of all ages.
The event will include a tractor run, childrens' disco, face painting, activities, a barbecue and monster auction, along with music in Kelly's bar later that evening.
