Gardai are warning about increase in thefts from sheds

Garda warning over shed security after thefts

Householders and tradespeople are being warned to be conscious of the security of sheds and vehicles during the summer months after a number of recent thefts.

Tools worth almost €1,500 were taken from a van on a construction site in Bealnamulla on Thursday afternoon last around 2.30pm.

Among the items swiped from the vehicle include a Makita screw gun, De Walt nail gun, SDS drill and Hilty nail gun, worth an estimated €1,450.

Sgt Andrew Haran from Athlone Garda Station said there has been a number of similar thefts of tools in that particular area in recent times and he just appealed to tradespeople to extra vigilant in terms of equipment which is vital for their livelihood.

Anyone offered cheap tools similar to those taken in Bealnamulla is urged to call Athlone Garda Station 09064 98550.

Meanwhile, Gardai are also investigating the theft of a lawnmower, strimmer and a bicyle from a shed in Altown, Garrycastle sometime after 10pm on Friday. The stolen items were valued at €450.

Appealing to the public to keep sheds secure, Sgt Haran said householders need to be conscious of the security of rear sheds or premises where garden equipment and tools are stored.
