Athlone Herstory Salon to be held on Monday

Caroline Coyle, a lecturer at the Athlone Institute of Technology and a research member at the Women, Ageing and Media Centre, University of Gloucestershire, will host an Athlone Herstory Salon on Monday next.

Herstory is a new cultural movement created to tell the life stories of women (www.herstory.ie). This salon will provide an opportunity to explore the life stories of historical, mythological and contemporary women through short presentations, informal discussion, poetry, art and music.

The Herstory Salon series started on January 20, 2017, the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration, with the objective of celebrating women’s stories, past and present, and sparking conversations for cultural change towards a egalitarian society.

The salons take an experimental approach, interweaving academic and public speakers with short performances from actors, poets, comedians and musicians, followed by open conversations that sometimes continue into the small hours.

Herstory Salons have taken place in The Irish Times, Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork, Waterford IT, University College Galway, NUI Maynooth, Milwaukee Irish Fest and the International Literature Festival Dublin, with future events planned in Oxford University, University College Dublin, Queens University Belfast, Freemasons Grand Lodge of Ireland and the 2018 St. Patrick’s Festival.

The Athlone Herstory Salon takes place on Monday next, November 20, from 7pm until 9pm in the Earl of Rosse Theatre, AIT.
