Rural speed needs to be tackled

Speed signs sought for South Roscommon village

Cllr John Naughten has called for flashing speed signs to be provided at the boundary of Taughmaconnell to deter people from speeding through the village.
He made his call at the January meeting of Athlone Municipal District members of Roscommon County Council, and his motion was seconded by Cllr John Keogh.
Cllr Naughten said he had been contacted by “a large number of people” in Taughmaconnell who were very concerned about the speed at which traffic is driving through the village. “I don't hold with the argument that if we put up too many signs people become immune to them, which is why I am calling for funding to be put in place, as a matter of urgency, to erect flashing speed signs at either end of the village” he said.
John O' Rourke (deputising for Director of Services, Majella Hunt) said speed enforcement was a matter for the Gardai and urged people to refer all complaints of speeding to Clonark Garda station.
