Water to be shut off in Athlone

New restrictions on the water supply in the Athlone and surrounding areas have been announced for tonight.

Irish Water says the water supply will be turned off from 8pm tonight to 8am on Monday in the in Athlone Town, Annagh, Baylin, Mount Temple, Ories areas.

It says this will help to allow water levels in reservoirs to refill.

Irish Water says the supply to Athlone town centre will be maintained.

It says the issue is due to the extremely cold weather conditions and exceptionally high water demand, some water treatment plants in the county are struggling to keep up with supply demands.

People are being asked to conserve water to avoid reservoirs emptying and water pressure to homes and businesses being affected.

Householders throughout the county are urged to conserve water by not running taps unnecessarily, taking showers instead of baths and to refrain from using dishwashers and washing machines.

Updates will be posted to the supply and service section of Irish Water’s website at www.water.ie/water-supply/supply-and-service-update/
