Christy Moore announces solo show in Athlone

Folk music legend Christy Moore is coming back to Athlone for a concert in the Dean Crowe Theatre at the end of May.

The solo show will take place on Thursday, May 31. Tickets are currently on sale from the venue, priced €39.

The singer is no stranger to the Midlands, having perfomed in Athlone on a number of occasions in recent years. He previously mentioned that his grandfather, Christopher Moore, hailed from the town.

Moore has also praised the Dean Crowe Theatre, describing it as one of his favourite independent venues.

Following a two sold-out shows there in 2011, he wrote: “There are many venues around the country which, despite their state funding and abundant staffing could not come near The Dean Crowe for efficiency, helpfulness, genuine welcome and atmosphere.

“In our experience, the more certain venues are State-funded and staffed, the harder it can be to work in them.

“A number of them are stuck so far up their own analysis that they are simply impossible to play. The Dean Crowe ranks amongst my favourite independent theatres. Long may they flourish.”

Aged 72, Moore has remained very active in recent times both in live performance and in the studio.

He released the critically acclaimed album 'Lily' in 2016 and the live collection 'On The Road' last year.

In the coming weeks he will be performing sold-out shows in a number of towns and cities including Letterkenny, Carrick-on-Shannon, Westport, Limerick and Liverpool.
