Public meeting on proposals for future of Athlone's west side

A public meeting is being held in Athlone tomorrow (Thursday) evening to discuss proposals for the future of the town's west side.

Local Senator Gabrielle McFadden has said she would like to see the popular 'Left Bank' tourism hub extended to Connaught Street and other nearby areas.

Senator McFadden has called the public meeting which is being held in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel at 6.30pm on Thursday.

"Last week the Government announced a €2 billion Urban Regeneration and Development Fund to deliver more compact, sustainable growth in Ireland’s urban centres," she commented.

"For some time now, I have been working on a proposal for the revival of businesses and accommodation in the west side of town and I believe that it is ideally suited for this scheme.

"I grew up here and this area is very dear to me. I would love to see it thrive again, with a combination of businesses and families making up a real community."

She encouraged local residents to come along to tomorrow's meeting.

"Athlone, and this part of Athlone, has a lot to offer, and we can make it into something special. All local residents and businesspeople are invited to come along to discuss how we can make this dream a reality."
