Irish Polish poetry evening set for Culture Night

Joanna Grobosz and Jason Gill prepare for the poetry reading.

An Irish Polish Evening will take place in Athlone on Culture Night, Friday September 21, at the Radisson Blu Hotel at 7pm.

This is a free evening of poetry and music entitled Some Like Poetry featuring readings of the work of Poland's well-known Nobel Prize-winning poet Wisława Szymborska, Ireland's Nobel prize-winning poet Seamus Heaney and Athlone's own international poet Desmond Egan.

The readings will be both in Polish and English and read by Joanna Grobosz, Secretary The Old Athlone Society, and Jason Gill, well known actor, author and playwright at the Little Theatre.

The Polish poet Wisława Szymborska died in February of this year and as part of celebrating her life and extending the cultural hand of welcome to our local Polish community a group of friends cane together to organise the evening of poetry.

The evening will also feature two Irish poets, introducing them to the Polish community.

This is a public event and is part of Culture Night.

Refreshments will be served on the evening and the event will also feature the music of Frédéric Chopin and John Field Polish and Irish composers respectively.
