Famous name brings All-Ireland Scór title back to St Dominic"s
The St Dominic"s GAA Club in Knockcroghery were celebrating last Saturday when club member James Murray won the All-Ireland Scór na nÓg title in Recitation, at the national finals which were held in Athlone IT.
Having won Connacht and county titles over the past few weeks, James took on the champions of the other three provinces in Athlone in front of a huge crowd and gave the performance of a lifetime.
Three hours later, he was crowned All-Ireland champion to the delight of the huge local support, bringing another All-Ireland title to the St Dominic"s club, who have a great tradition of competing in Scór.
James is a grandson of the late Jamesie Murray, the renowned footballer who lifted the Sam Maguire as Roscommon captain in 1943 and 1944.
And last weekend"s success also sparked homecoming celebrations in the village of Knockcroghery.
A formal reception took place in the Community Centre with club president Donald Feeley, secretary Larry Shine, assistant chairman David O"Connor and county Scór officer Diane Dennehy all congratulating James and, also the author of the monologue, Thomas Murray, from Rahara.
Fr Donal Morris also congratulated James on his outstanding success and paid tribute to Ann Gillespie and the present Scór committee who do so much work for the youth of the parish and, indeed, all the people who kept Scór going over the past 40 years.
This is the second All-Ireland Scór na nÓg title St Dominic"s has won; Aine Shine also won a national title in recitation in 2001. A ballad group from the club won a Scór sinsear All-Ireland title back during the 1990s.
