Molloy helps Ireland to victory over England

MOATE boxer Gary Molloy played his part in a fantastic double-victory for Ireland over their English counterparts in Mayo late last week.

The Mount Carmel Drive native defeated England's Paul Butler at the Castlecourt Hotel in Westport last Wednesday on a 4-3 scoreline to secure a vital victory for the Irish team as they notched up a 5-4 win.

Molloy's victory came in the 51kg category and further wins on the night for European youth champions Jason Quigley, Ray Moylette and John Sweeney gave Ireland a 1-0 leg advantage going into Thursday's second leg last Thursday.

Although Molloy was not on the card for Thursday evening, Ireland comfortably saw off the English with wins for Danny Coughlan, Tyrone McCullagh, Eric Donovan, Robert Gorman, John Joe Joyce, Stephen O'Reilly and Alan Reynolds, ensuring a straightforward 7-3 result in favour of the home team.
