ATHLONE Boat Club was strongly represented at last weekend's Home International Regatta in Inniscarra, Co Cork. Three competitors from Athlone - 18-year-olds Colin Barrett and Sean Egan, and 16-year-old Kevin Molloy - donned the green jersey of the host nation, and helped Ireland finish third in the Men's Junior 18 Level category.
Ireland finished just behind Wales in second place, while a strong English team won that particular category.
Coached locally by Fergus Hannon, the Athlone trio have honed their skills carefully and in dedicated fashion over recent years, and Athlone Boat Club Captain for 2010, Mark Egan, said the club was "very proud" of the lads.
"It's great for a club like ours to have anyone represent their country at a top rowing Regatta, but to have three young lads on the same team was an outstanding feat for our club. We are all delighted and very proud of their achievements and their selection was well justified," Mark said.
"Athlone Boat Club would also like to place on record our thanks to the Athlone public, who have always given terrific support to the club, and the appearance of these three outstanding young rowers is the culmination of a lot of hard work individually, but also due in no small part to that continued public support," he added.
The Home International Regatta is a rowing regatta held every year for competitors from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Events are held for both men and women at junior (under 18) and senior levels. The race has been held since 1962 and each country take it in turns to host the event.
