'Gillespie factor' should add spice to Midlands Derby

The expected Longford Town debut of former Northern Ireland international Keith Gillespie is set to add intrigue to the Midlands Derby with Athlone Town on Saturday at Flancare Park (7.30pm), writes Adrian Cusack.
Athlone manager Mike Kerley said yesterday (Tuesday) that he expects Gillespie to start for Longford at the weekend. The 36-year-old has lined out for Manchester United, Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers, but he more recently played for Glentoran and Darlington.
Athlone lost 2-1 to Longford in the EA Sports League Cup when the teams last met at Flancare Park a little over a fortnight ago. Kerley described that encounter as "a useful exercise" for his team, but he said Gillespie's expected appearance will bring a new element to this Saturday's fixture.
"Longford like to play a bit of football and that game against us in the League Cup was a useful exercise because it showed where we had weaknesses in a few areas. It will be a different game on Saturday, with Keith Gillespie coming on board for Longford. He's an interesting signing for them and he obviously has some great experience, so he's a player who we'll have to keep an eye on.
"I think his signing should be good for Longford and they'll be hoping that he can help bring out a big crowd for it also."
Athlone secured a creditable 0-0 draw at home to Cork City last Friday. It was the club's third draw from three league outings to date, and Kerley said he was satisfied with the campaign so far.
"I think given the fact that we have a very young side, and considering the build-up we had to the league, we've made a very reasonable start when you consider that two of those games (against Waterford United and Cork) were against teams who would be tipped for promotion."
Kevin Williamson, who was suspended for the Cork game, is eligible for this weekend but a family commitment (his sister's wedding) means he will miss out. Meanwhile defender Jamie Carr, who had been injured, has been training this week and is expected to be back in contention for a place at the weekend.
