Mixed sporting weekend for local teams

Westmeath hurlers followed in the footsteps of their football counterparts by reaching their divisional final in the National Hurling League.

The side, under Brian Hanley, easily overcame Kildare, to seal a Division 2A final against Laois on Sunday week.

Meanwhile, Westmeath ladies footballers who had already qualified for the Division Two semi-final also saw off Kildare.

In soccer, Athlone Town succumbed to an 87th minute equaliser in an exciting six-goal thriller at home to Salthill Devon on Friday night. Having twice being in front, Roddy Collins's men will rue the failure to secure all three points. However, the 55th minute sending off of Philip Gorman was a pivotal moment in the contest.

St Peter's were knocked out of the Counties Cup on penalties against Mullingar Athletic while Willow Park also lost to Kilbarrack on penalties in the Leinster Junior Cup.

Buccaneers game away to Ballinahinch was called off due to weather conditions in the north.
