Athlone IT's Shaunagh Jackson will be going to the World University Games in Russia.

Athlone IT student chosen for World University Games

ATHLONE IT student Shaunagh Jackson has been selected on the Irish Women’s football squad to represent Ireland at the forthcoming World University Games - to be held in Kazan, Russia from July 5 to 17.

The World University Games take place every two years and represent the pinnacle of student sports worldwide. Approximately 13,000 students from all over the world will compete at the multi-sport event. Shaunagh is a first-year student in Athlone Institute of Technology studying a BA (HONS) in Social Care Practice. She is 18 years of age and is currently playing with Castlebar Celtic in the Women's National League.

Maz Sweeney, the AIT/FAI Soccer Facilitator, has also been selected to travel to the Games as part of the soccer team coaching staff. She said: 'I’m absolutely delighted for Shaunagh. She has been exceptional all season for AIT and has been one of the most exciting players to watch in the WSCAI Premier League this season. For a student at just 18 to get this amazing opportunity will be great experience and I have no doubt she will do herself and AIT very proud.'

Hopes are also high at the Institute that men's football team player, Neil Harney (of Athlone Town FC) will also be named in the Irish men's squad for the Games later in the week.
