Padraig Pearses clubman Niall Carty has been appointed Roscommon senior football captain for 2014.

The 22-year-old defender succeeds Cathal Cregg in the role. Donie Shine of Clann na nGael has been named vice-captain by team manager John Evans.

Carty was captain of the Padraig Pearses team which reached the 2012 Roscommon SFC final, in which they were defeated by neighbours St Brigid's.

Roscommon were beaten by 2012 All-Ireland champions Donegal in a senior football challenge in Convoy last weekend.

The Rossies will begin their 2014 campaign with a Connacht FBD League fixture against Sligo IT in Elphin on Sunday (throw-in: 2pm).

Roscommon will be hoping to push for promotion from Division 3 in this year's Allianz Football League.
