Rio Ferdinand, the former Man Utd defender, could be playing in Athlone in August.

Rio on his way Athlone?

SOCCER superstar Rio Ferdinand could be on his way to Athlone.

Ferdinand, 35, recently left Manchester Utd after 12 years at Old Trafford, during which time he won ten major honours, including six English Premier League titles and the Champions League. Now, it appears Ferdinand is about to sign for Queen’s Park Rangers - managed by his former mentor at West Ham Utd, Harry Redknapp.

With QPR set to visit Athlone for a pre-season friendly on Tuesday, August 5, local soccer fans could get an opportunity to see the 81-times capped former England international. Ferdinand previously played for West Ham and Leeds Utd, and according to QPR boss Redknapp this week, his signing for the Loftus Road club has been agreed, in principle, and should be completed after the World Cup.

The QPR squad that travels to Athlone is also likely to include Republic of Ireland international Richard Dunne.
