Keena leads the way

St. Francis 4; St. Coman's 1

ST FRANCIS starlet Sean Keena put in a sterling performance up front for St. Francis as they defeated St. Coman"s 4-1 at a bitterly cold Iona Park in this Under-11 Premier Division clash last Saturday afternoon.

The young St Francis striker was in great form, showing some great skill throughout and aiding his team"s cause with a well taken goal.

The game itself started at a frantic pace with an early goal for St Francis courtesy of a superb strike from outside the box by Michael McGrane, giving Ross Young no chance in the Coman"s goal.

Coman"s immediately pushed forward looking for an equaliser and showed some great passing football but lost possession deep in St Francis territory and were hit on the counter attack. St Francis forced a corner kick in the fifth minute of the game and managed to stretch their lead from the resulting kick. Konrad Krysian swung in a great ball for Tiernan Dickson to head home and give the away side a 2-0 lead.

St Francis continued to push forward but were denied by some good defending by Darragh Healy in the Coman"s defence.

However, Sean Keena continued to wreak havoc in the Coman"s defence by showing some great skills. On one such occasion, he weaved his way into the box and forced a very fine save out of Coman"s "keeper Ross Young.

Darragh Curry then went close for St Francis late in the opening period, bringing another great save out of an impressive Ross Young.

St Coman"s were still very much in the contest, trying hard against impressive opposition, but St Francis looked in excellent form and capable of netting more goals as the contest progressed.

After the restart, St Coman"s went in search of a goal with Daniel Heavin doing fantastically well and being unlucky not to pull a goal back for the home side.

The St Coman"s defence seemed to be holding tight in the second period with some more fantastic defending by Darragh Healy, but it didn"t last long as Sean Keena struck in the seventh minute of the second half to make it 3-0 to the away side.

Despite being 3-0 up, the Francis defence looked a little bit nervy at times, as Cathal Daly went very close to pulling a goal back for St Coman"s.

It was Cathal Daly again who caused problems for the Francis defenders as he showed some impressive touches and went close to scoring late on in the second period.

Konrad Krysian showed good skill down the wing and went very close to making it 4-0 to Francis.

Indeed, he did make it 4-0 in the last seconds of the second period with a fantastic strike from a very narrow angle.

The third period began with St Coman"s immediately going on the offensive with Daniel Heavin, Cathal Daly and Niall Hanevy all combining well, but Francis defended stoutly to prevent what would have being a great team goal.

Coman"s continued to push forward early on in the third and final period, and must be admired for this bravery, but were denied this time by the crossbar following Niall Hanevy"s strike.

Coman"s produced some more great passing football up front and were denied by Ryan Jinks in the Francis goal, but they were eventually rewarded for their impressive attacking football by grabbing a goal with five minutes remaining, when Cathal Daly hit the target.

However, time was against Coman"s and despite a battling display by them, the match ended in a 4-1 win for a very impressive St Francis.
