Guitar magic with Mathiske

Australian guitar virtuoso Bruce Mathiske has his own take on Ireland with his song, "Soft Day in Athlone" and local audiences will have the chance to see the legendary guitarist in full flow when he plays The Shamrock Lodge Hotel on Wednesday, August 20 next.

Bruce"s many eclectic and various music influences from his world travels and guitarists from the likes of Chet Atkins, Jimi Hendrix, Leo Kottke, BB King, Barney Kessell and Al Di Meola have evolved into an exciting style all his own. His albums and concerts are a mix of many rhythms and moods including,

Spanish, Cuban, blues, gypsy, ambient/landscape, jazz and folk. Add to this Didgeridoo and Mathiske surpasses expectations at every turn, audiences are gob-smacked at his ability to play bass, rhythm and melody simultaneously.

Arguably one of Ireland"s most exciting cover acts on the live circuit today, Karma Athlone presents Royal Flush in the club on Sunday, August 17 next at 11.30pm.

Performing hits from the past 20 years, the band has attracted plenty of attention throughout the country and the band have been touring constantly over the past few years, building a steady following in the process.

Making a real exhibition of himself...

An exciting new exhibition featuring contemporary Celtic slate art by Drogheda-born artist Paul McGahey is currently taking centre stage at Athlone Library.

In his first exhibition, "Draiocht", Paul uses 100 to 200 year old recycled Blue Bangor slate to create artistic and original images which are mounted on mirrors.

The highly recommended exhibition will run until August 25 and, as it"s free, there"s no reason not to come along and appreciate this talented artists beautiful work.

With tickets selling out in double-time, local music fans should not miss their chance to catch the gifted Hamell on Trial in the Bog Lane Theatre this Saturday, August 16 for what promises to be a whirlwind performance of exceptional music and comedy.

Before he heads to Edinburgh for a week long performance of his award winning stage show "the Terrorism of everyday life", Hamell makes a very special return to Ballymahon where he played a sensational show just last February.

The fun of the Fleadh in Offaly

Offaly"s population is likely to quadruple in the coming weeks when Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2008 kicks off on August 17 bringing an expected 250,000 or more visitors to the County for what promises to be a sensational line-up of music and entertainment.

Following its phenomenal success last year, the Fleadh makes a welcome return to the midlands in the coming weeks. It begins on Sunday, August 17, and continues until August 24 next.
