"Uisce" art exhibition
Last Thursday night, an array of paintings featuring underwater swimming was exhibited in the restaurant overlooking the swimming pool at the Athlone Regional Sports Centre.
The convenor of the underwater art exhibition is Moate artist, Leslie Wingfield, who displayed sixteen of her paintings of different mediums such as acrylic, oil and canvas and mixed media.
Each of Leslie"s paintings featured underwater sequences and people swimming underwater.
Leslie"s work has in the past, been singled out by Irish Times critic, Aidan Dunne, as 'highly accomplished.'
The art exhibition, entitled, "Uisce", is the first of its kind at the Sports Centre, and the gathering at the opening of the exhibition were welcomed by sports centre official, Ger O"Donoghue.
'We are delighted to give Leslie the opportunity to showcase her splendid work,' said Ger.
'We have been successful in adding to both our facilities and services since we first opened nearly seven years ago, and we will be doubling the size of our current gym in the next six months and look forward to continuing to improve and develop our facilities.'
Cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council, Cllr. Joe Whelan, who like Leslie is based in Moate, opened the exhibition at the Athlone Sports Centre.
Cllr. Whelan heaped praise on the artist, who has been living in Moate since she moved to the midlands as a boarder of the Convent of Mercy, Moate in the mid-1970"s, from the UK.
'Leslie has an inherent talent for Art, and she has a love for Art,' said the Cathaoirleach.
Leslie thanked all involved in organising the exhibition, including Westmeath County Council for her fiscal support, and she also thanked Liam Cunningham of the Regional Sports Centre, and Mary Nagle from the centre"s restaurant for 'the invading of her restaurant space,.'
