Ninety years and still going strong for Coffey"s of Lecarrow!
Coffey"s Pub of Lecarrow celebrated 90 years of success in style last Saturday night with plenty of music and entertainment to keep the party going into the wee hours. The popular Lecarrow pub has been run by the Coffey family for three generations now and is truly at the very heart of the local community. First established by Patrick Coffey in 1918, the pub was then taken over by Patrick"s son John Joe in 1929. 'My father John Joe ran the pub until 1979 when I eventually took over,' says John Coffey, who has also worked in Coffey"s Pub since 1966. 'I suppose it"s part and parcel of the local community alright,' he adds. 'The premises has been modernised over the years but it has the same old-style feel. The shop has always been here too but that"s certainly been modernised into more of a mini-supermarket style store.' Times have certainly changed in the intervening decades, as John points out. 'Women didn"t really go into pubs back then, although they did have the snug!' he says. Saturday night"s celebrations were certainly a family affair for the Coffey family who travelled the length and breadth of the country for the anniversary celebrations. 'It was a fantastic night, with music and prizes and there was relatives from all across the country down for it. Of course we had all the regulars here too so it was a great night,' John says. 'It"s only another ten years until the 100 year anniversary so we"re nearly there!' he adds.
