Athlone IT student set for European Cross Country Championships
Athlone IT student John Travers has qualified for the Irish team to compete in the European Athletics U23 Cross Country Championships in Hungary. The Drimnagh man is in the second year of a Higher Certificate in Sport & Recreation at Athlone IT and is a sports scholarship holder. This year's event - the 19th edition of the Championships - begins on December 9 in the Hungarian riverside town of Szentendre, just outside the capital Budapest. Chris Johnston will lead the Irish U23 men's team, after winning his category at the National Championships last weekend, and is joined on the team by David Fitzmaurice, Patrick Hogan, Sam Mealy, John Travers, and Shane Quinn. Travers, 22, is a highly-rated athlete on the Irish scene, and is a member of the Donore club in Dublin.
